Salmon and Ikura Rice at Tsukiji

Salmon and Ikura rice

Delicious start to the day at Tsukiji Tadokoro Shokuhin, a fish roe specialty shop. The eat-in counter has rice and pasta dishes with ikura (salmon roe), tarako and mentaiko (both from pollack roe). There is also onigiri or omusubi rice balls stuffed with roe for take-away.

Tsukiji breakfast

This is rice sauteed in butter and soy sauce with grilled salmon and ikura. The mitsuba greens brighten up the dish. A similar dish is made with pasta noodles which is also oishii delicious.

Fish roe

Today I happened to be seated next to a monk from a shrine in Aomori prefecture in the northern part of Japan. I recommended he order a side dish of Matsumae zuké which is made with herring roe, dried squid, and kombu kelp. He told the shop that it was better than what he can get back home in Tohoku. 🙂
