Kanekoya

Fabulous tempura lunch in Kichijōji at Kanekoya. Went at 10:45 a.m. and there was already a line in front of the shop. The restaurant opens at 11:00 a.m. and we were lucky to get in at the first seating. When we left the queue was looong.

Kanekoya serves a simple tempura donburi, rice bowl topped with tempura that is dipped into a savory and umami-rich soy sauce. All of the donburi come with two pieces of shrimp, shishitō pepper, nori, and a soft-boiled egg.

¥880 maitake ($6)

¥980 kisu sillago whitefish ($7)

¥1380 anago sea eel ($10)

For an after lunch coffee the cool Blackwell Coffee was the perfect spot. The owner, Kai san, opened the shop about eight years ago. Tell him what kind of coffee you like and he’ll help select which single origin or blend will be to your liking. Blackwell is on a popular, mostly pedestrian street, lined with a variety of cool independent shops.

Both of these are near Inokashira Kōen park, which has gorgeous sakura – hopefully blossoming in about a week or so.
