Hotaka kissaten at Ochanomizu Station opened in 1955. I love the velvet forest green booths and dark wood. The coffee here is very smooth. A simple toast, margarine, and orange marmalade is the morning menu.

On a recent rainy morning the shop was quiet. A few solo customers reading a book and newspaper. I got some writing done in the peace. There is no background music so it feels more like a library, aside from the buzz of pedestrians, mostly students and office workers using the station.

In the past the coffee shop overlooked the trains passing on the Chuo and Sobu lines passing below the windows. At the moment Ochanomizu Station is under construction so this day’s view was of boards covering the station. The closest Ochanomizu Station exit is the Hijiribashi Exit. After exiting take a left and the coffee shop is on your left.

Alas, margarine toast is the new ‘butter toast’.
