Bandai Atami Onsen in Fukushima

Shinkansen 🚅 in a little over an hour
to Kōriyama, Fukushima.

For Golden Week holidays we explored Fukushima in the Tōhoku region in northern Japan. On the first day we took the shinkansen to Kōriyama. Kōriyama is only one hour and fifteen minutes by shinkansen. Tourist information staff is very helpful. There is also an exhibit of local products by D&Department. A good reminder of products to purchase during holidays.

Kōriyama tourist information is friendly and helpful.

We started at Bandai Atami Onsen. A short seventeen-minute train ride from Kōriyama station on the JR Banetsusai line. Bandai Atami is an onsen resort area and several hotels and ryokan inns offer day passes to use the hot springs on the property.

Hana no Yu hotel hot springs

Hana no Yu hotel has a big variety of hot springs. On this day the men could use the indoor hot springs on the 10th floor with glorious views of the mountains. The women had the 1st floor area with over a dozen different baths, mostly rotenburo – outdoor, but covered. The day pass was 2,000 yen ($15) and a taxi from the station ($7). A limited number of passes are given out. Highly recommend.

Near the station is an amazing shop promoting local products – both food and crafts. There is also a casual restaurant. Amazing selection including miso, tsukemono pickles, peach flavored potato chips, saké, and much more. It is only a few minutes from the station. Be sure to make time to carefully peruse the shop.

Fun! Does the onsen allow tattooed travelers?

    1. Good question. Not sure. I did see a no tattoo sign at one of the three onsen we visited. Hope you’re well!
