A fun food tip in Tokyo are the rooftop picnic areas on department stores. It’s a great spot to enjoy a casual meal. This is Nihonbashi Takashimaya. The basement depachika food halls are filled with many options for lunch. Coloful #bento boxes, onigiri rice balls, sandwiches, salads, sushi, and much more. The rooftop picnic areas often have a vending machine for tea, water, and coffee.
When I worked at Takashimaya in the depachika one of the managers on the floor told me I should encourage visitors to take a bento on the rooftop. He said to recommend getting a chilled beer or a small bottle of saké. Ask for small tasting cups if you get a bottle of saké.
Another benefit of dining on the rooftop is that each person can pick their own lunch. I am also still nervous about dining indoors with other people. So the rooftop is an outdoor picnic is easy to socially distance.

My bento this day was a fried #fugu. I don’t get to eat #pufferfish often, but my favorite way to enjoy it is deep-fried. It’s delicious, even at room temperature.
Many department stores have rooftop gardens. Double check at the concierge or with staff if there is an okujō 屋上 rooftop area if you’re not sure.
