Onsen ryokan are an excellent way to relax and rejuvenate while in Japan. My girlfriends were visiting from the US and we booked a night at Kira no Sato on the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka. It’s about a two hour ride on the Saphir Odoriko train from Tokyo Station.

The property has a variety of rooms and is family friendly with some activities/games for the smaller ones. We booked the private villas on the far side of grounds. The villas include a private bath with onsen water.

There are also three other private baths that are first come first served. What I loved most about the onsen was the main public bath area. I think I counted eleven different types of tubs and communal baths, all at different temperatures.

I prefer rotenburo outdoor baths and most of the baths at Kira no Sato are outdoors.

A stay at Kira no Sato includes dinner and breakfast. Guests choose dining times when they check in and their menus. For dinner we opted for the wagyu beef course which is grilled on the table on a lava stone. Breakfast could be Japanese or Western.

After checking in everyone changes into casual wear provided by the ryokan. It’s funny, everyone walking around the property in similar clothes. I feel like I am at an institution. 🤣 We loved it all, including the friendly staff. An excellent value starting at about 28,000 yen (about $200) for the room and two meals. We were all so relaxed by the end of the stay. We did stop by Mount Omuro the following day on our way to Ito Station where we enjoyed the afternoon before catching our train back to Tokyo.
