Tsukishima Monjayaki

Most people are familiar with okonomiyaki, the savory cabbage pancake from Osaka. Tokyo’s version is called monjayaki, which is similar that it is also cooked on an iron plate. Monjayaki has much more liquid and I prefer this one as it can be cooked into thin and crispy bits.

The Tsukishima neighborhood is ground central for monjayaki in Tokyo. Monja Street in Tsukishima has over 80 restaurants serving monjayaki, okonomiyaki, yakisoba, and other foods grilled on an iron teppan grill.

A popular shop is Moheji もへじ. I went to the Moheji #4 shop. Moheji hanare no hanare no hanare.🤣 月島もんじゃもへじのはなれのはなれのはなれ. Friendly staff cooke up the monjayaki or okonomiyaki for diners. My favorite is mentaiko and mochi. The tip is to be patient and let the monjayaki cook up until it gets crispy. Moheji’s version of okonomiyaki was only made with an egg, no flour batter. New to me.

We added a tomato salad and cucumbers with a miso dip to add some vegetables to our dinner.

I love Tsukishima and Monja Street. If you’re looking for a local meal this is a fun evening.
