Toyosu Market

It was my pleasure to get an interpreting job at Toyosu Market with a journalist writing an article on the world’s biggest seafood market. Although I did tours at Tsukiji Market the new Toyosu Market is off limits to non-trade people.

One morning it was amazing to meet Yamazaki san of Yamaharu. A colorful variety of seafood, even though it was the day after a typhoon and airplanes were not flying into Tokyo. Yamaharu sends seasonal fresh seafood to @wegmans at #AstorPlace in New York City.

Uni auction

Another morning it was a 3 a.m. wake up call to attend the auctions at Toyosu Market. My heart danced to see familiar faces from years ago at Tsukiji Market. It’s been maybe about ten years since I have seen the uni auction, the live seafood, fresh seafood, processed seafood, and of course the fresh and frozen tuna auction. To see the wooden and styrofoam tuna coffins once more.

Live fish.

Much has changed in regards to sanitation, temperature control, and movement of product. Toyosu is 1.7 times bigger than Tsukiji. A lot more area to cover to get from point A to point B.

Tuna auction.

Looking forward to reading Jon Fasman’s article on Toyosu Market in the Economist. He asked so many brilliant questions. I learned so much about how the market operates. Truly fascinating.
