Nagoya Bucyo Coffee

Nagoya is rich with retro kissaten coffee shops. It is the highlight of each visit. Bucyo Coffee is a popular shop that is a few blocks from the Courtyard Marriott.

The ogura a toast is a sweet azuki bean paste with toast. Bucyo serves it over toast but also over a kayser bun. The kinako paste is a sweet spread made from roasted dried soybeans and includes crushed dried soybeans. I added to the order the mini salad with bacon and egg on the side. They asked if they could add some ketchup to the egg. A very Japanese way to enjoy fried eggs.

I was so excited to see that they had shiso juice on the menu. A sweet and tart juice made from red shiso leaves. It’s especially refeshing on hot days. It was made in house and was delicious!

I went to Bucyo Coffee one morning and there were about 30 people queueing under the terribly hot sun. I gave up, but went early the next morning and put my name on the waiting list before it opened. Luckily I got in on the first seating!

Highly recommend. Just be warned of the long lines at this popular shop – or go early and queue before they open at 7:15 a.m.

Wow!, Purple shiso juice, how great!

  2. Does that kinako paste resemble peanut butter? I’ve speculated whether anyone had tried making a nut spread from roasted kinako since peanuts are also roasted legumes.

    1. Nothing like peanut butter. It tastes to me more like kinako mixed with sugar. I could be a wrong.
