Ise Shrine

First time to Mie prefecture and the main reason for this visit is to make a pilgrimage to Ise Jingu, the Shinto shrine dedicated to the solar goddess Amaterasu. She is the ancestral deity to the Imperial family. Amaterasu has been enshrined at Ise Shrine for 2,000 years.

There is a vibrant and colorful yokochō street filled with shops and restaurants leading up to the Naiku gate.

Lots of street food including croquettes, frozen amazaké, fish cakes – we loved the octopus with ginger, and dango 🍡 sticky rice balls.

If you try one thing when you visit, be sure to have Ise udon, the local version of the wheat noodle. The lightest and softest udon I have ever tried. It is served with a sweet soy sauce. Simple and delicious.

I look forward to returning, in a cooler season. 😭😭😭🥵
