Tohto Grill

On a quiet back street of Tsukiji Market is Tohto Grill. I first went as a new hire of Uoriki seafood company. We had an early morning visit to Tsukiji to see the auctions: tuna, uni, live seafood, and processed seafood. The only thing we missed was the produce auction.

Breakfast was at Tohto Grill, in the basement of a nondescript building. Back then the restaurant was packed with fishmongers, many of them smoking. Now Tohto Grill is non smoking and sadly most of the fishmongers are working at Toyosu Market, so the restaurant is often quiet.

Here is a recent breakfast was a daily special of tonkatsu, tuna donburi, salad, and miso soup. For the basement bargain price of only 950 yen ($6.50). Most diners sit facing the television perched in one corner of the room. It’s not unusual for the other diners to order a beer or saké, as they are finishing their work day. I however am starting my day as I am here before a market tour.

Tohto Grill was recently mentioned in the New York Times in a fun article by Timothy Taylor. Taylor san writes about cooking classes he takes in Tokyo. The article started before the pandemic. Wonderful to see it completed with a second visit after the border reopened.
