Ginza Maru is a kappō restaurant that serves lovely grilled fish lunch sets in the heart of Ginza. Kappō is like a kaiseki restaurant but a bit more casual and with a counter where diners can talk to the chef preparing some of the dishes. On this day the options were miso gindara black cod (their signature dish), salted saba Pacific mackerel, sake lees salmon, and miso sawara Spanish mackerel. For non-seafood eaters there is also grilled pork.

The lunch set for the black cod is 1,650 yen ($11). The black cod was crispy on the outside, the delicate meat was juicy. Small dishes can be added to the meal including ikura, simmered kabocha squash, green salad with salted kombu, and more. There is also a black bean kinako roasted soybean powder ice cream.
Ginza Maru is located just behind the Ginza Six department store. Reservations for lunch can be made and recommended as it’s a popular shop. Or try to arrive before the noon lunch hour and hope to get in. The dinner is based on classic Japanese cuisine and is a multi-course meal. Maru has a sister shop in Shibuya at Shibuya Stream called Maru Bengara.
