Fukui Lacquerware

Lacquerware is a beautiful way to present dishes. This gorgeous red lacquer bowl is from Shitsurindō. In Tōkyō the lovely Fukui antenna shop in Ginza sells this Shitsurindō bowl. This bowl feels silky soft and is big enough to use as a donburi rice bowl, but also for noodles, miso soup, or for snacks. As the bowl is wooden it’s easy to pick up a hot bowl of soup as the outside of the bowl doesn’t get hot. For 6,050 yen ($40) I think it’s an excellent value for this all-purpose bowl.

Shitsurindō was established in 1793 in the Echizen area of Fukui prefecture. Echizen is the oldest lacquerware production area of Japan.

The Fukui Antenna shop is in the heart of Ginza. It sells traditional crafts like lacquerware, knives, and a big selection of saké and food. There is also a nice restaurant serving local dishes including soba and sauce katsu donburi, served in a lacquer bowl. Chūō-ku, Ginza 1-5-8

It’s easy to care for lacquerware. Wash with a gentle sponge. Be sure to use a wooden spoon or wooden chopsticks.
