Happened upon a busy soba and udon shop in the basement of the Shinbashi Eki Mae Building #1. The kissaten that I wanted to go to wasn’t open. This shop was busy with salarymen headed to work slurping noodles while standing for breakfast.

I ordered a bowl of cold soba buckwheat noodles topped with maitake mushroom tempura (590 yen/$4). The mushrooms are in a thin layer and fried until crispy. I am already trying to plot my return. Many of the diners were eating the same dish but with hot noodles. I prefer cold noodles, especially when it’s so hot and humid.
The basement of this building is a maze filled with tiny restaurants that are open for lunch and dinner. This was the only shop open before 8 a.m.
