Hand Roll Sushi Party

Sushi party for dear friends in Minnesota. In the past we made maki zushi rolls but I much prefer the Japanese homestyle version of temaki zushi hand rolls. No rolling or slicing so hand rolls are so much easier to make. Simply put some vinegared rice on the nori, add your fillings, and roll up like a cone. It was a hit and everyone mastered the skill!

We brought from Japan inari zushi, sweet fried tofu packs, which was also popular. Along with nori, soy sauce, miso, and miso soup ingredients.

Fillings included tuna – both akami lean and toro fatty, salmon, shime saba pickled mackerel, shrimp, kani kama imitation crab, canned tuna with mayonnaise (tuna mayo), tamago omelet, and corn with mayonnaise. Also included some tuna poké with avocado, spicy tuna, and tuna with takuan pickled daikon.

United Noodles

Picked up most of the ingredients at United Noodles and Coastal Seafoods in Minneapolis. Have been shopping at United Noodles with my Japanese mother since the 80s. Picked up rice, sushi vinegar, tofu, gyoza wrappers, spring roll wrappers, vegetables, and even some tableware here. United Noodle also has soy sauce, nori, and I believe the fried tofu inari zushi packs. United also has a branch in Woodbury. We did pick up a pack of @sunnoodles ramen tonkotsu which was amazing. The fresh noodles with a fatty pork broth.

Coastal Seafoods

My mind was blown away by the seafood selection at Coastal Seafoods. We picked up excellent frozen tuna (lean and fatty), shime saba vinegared mackerel, and fresh salmon. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Was hoping to buy some hamachi yellowtail, but the frozen pieces were too big (and pricey) for our party. Coastal has a mind-blowing selection of seafood, tinned fish, and seasonings and condiments. Enjoyed some fried calamari with deep-fried sweet chili peppers that was so good I went back later in our stay.

We’ve done the sushi party over the years. This year it felt like the hand rolls were the best solution and loved getting our shopping done in one stop at United Noodles and Coastal Seafood as they share the same parking lot. We did supplement with items we brought from Tokyo, but it’s not necessary.

    1. It’s a ritual that we love. Over the years it has become easy with the ingredients available, even in the landlocked Midwest.
