Onigiri

The famous onigiri (or omusubi) restaurant Bongo has opened a sister shop in Shinjuku called Manma @onigiri_manma. We loved the onigiri. Mentaiko & cream cheese. Seasoned meat with a soy sauce-cured egg. Grilled salmon & sujiko salmon roe. My favorite was the bacon & cheese. The only side dishes are miso soup and tsukemono pickles.

There is usually a long queue in front of the shop but on this day there were only about a dozen people in line so we joined. Even the staffer said we were lucky that the line was so short! Another option is to order the onigiri to go which is a shorter wait. Then take the rice balls to Shinjuku Gyōen Park for a picnic.

My girlfriend told me that she went to the main Bongo in Otsuka and that at 8:30 in the morning there were 100 people in line! Bongo has also opened at Haneda Airport (but do also expect to wait there). The name of the shop there is called Konga @onigiri_konga. Not sure, but it looks like there may also be a shop in Akasaka in the basement of the Akasaka Biz Tower also called Konga.

When the Shinjuku shop first opened it was called Bongo but only recently changed the name to Manma. The staffer said it was so that the shops would not be confused.
