Nagano Chōju Shokudō

Hi

When we are traveling and not sure where to eat we often go to station buildings or department stores. These areas where people gather are sure to have reputable restaurants, many local. At Nagano Station is Chōju Shokudō, the long life dining hall. It is on the third floor of the MIDORI Nagano mall. On the second floor are some fantastic shops for local sake, wine, fermented foods, oyaki dumplings, tsukemono pickles, and many food products. Budget some time to peruse the area.

Nagano prefecture has a local food culture rich with fermented foods and some of the longest living Japanese in the country. I was so excited to see many cookbooks by one of my favorite authors, Takako Yokoyama @takakoyokoyama_sasisu. I was told by the staff that Yokoyama sensei creates a seasonal menu item for the restaurant.

I had Yokoyama’s summer dish of summer vegetables simmered with pork, cucumber and ginger tsukemono pickles, eggplant miso soup, and rice cooked with grains. It was nutritious and delicious. In front of the shop are plastic food samples of popular menu items.

The last photos are from Yokoyama sensei’s cookbooks that focus on the cuisine of Shinshū, the Nagano region.
