Honmura An is a charming soba shop with handmade buckwheat noodles and a tempting menu of side dishes. It’s all good. Today was a fabulous avocado salad (900 yen) thinly sliced onions, smoky katsuobushi flakes, and a shiso and tart ume dressing. Nukazuke rice bran pickles (850 yen) that are pleasantly sour and crunchy. Soba tofu (800 yen) was a dense buckwheat tofu with a sweet thick soy sauce.

Tip: inquire if there is a seasonal soba. Today at Honmura An it was a refreshing shiso (1,500 yen). The noodles are made by hand in the front of the restaurant.

@honmura_an is a short walk from Ogikubo Station (take the West Exit). The restaurant opens at 11 a.m. At 11:20 many tables were already filled. Irises lit up the garden.

You may know the name from their prior shops in Soho in New York City and in Roppongi. Now the Ogikubo main shop is the only one.

Honmura An 本むら庵
Suginami-ku, Ogikubō 2-7-11
The English menu includes photos.
Last time I was at the Roppongi location — and this was years ago — the Frenchman who was coach of the men’s national football (soccer) team and the Frenchman who was a tennis announcer for Wowow tv were eating together. I should’ve gone there more often.
The Soho location was great, back in the day.
Another reminder of how old I’ve gotten. Sigh.
Regards.
Honmura An has many fans. I loved the SoHo location. I am sad the Roppongi branch closed. It was always busy when I went. I hope you can make it to the Ogikubo location!
