
Yamato is a very cool shop that specializes in fermented foods including soy sauce, miso, and kōji products. Staff are helpful and friendly in this busy shop and offer many samples before purchasing.

I’m a big fan of the fermented kōji amazaké which is an all natural probiotic drink. The shio salt kōji and soy sauce kōji are fabulous for marinating proteins or using as salt and soy sauce substitutes for soups, salad dressings, and more. I always pick up a bottle of the negi miso leek miso paste which I love for a dip for crudité.

Yamato has a beautiful shop in the Higashi Chaya district. The company dates back to 1911.
