Nishihara High Street

Nishihara High Street near Hatagaya Station is filled with so many cool shops. I used to live in this neighborhood 20 years ago. It was not this hip back then.

Katane Bakery Cafe. Indulged in a basket of breads, salad, and latte. 1,210 yen (only $8). All of the breads are delicious. Picked up some focaccia and ciabatta from the shop. The basement cafe, which feels like it could be in Paris with the Chagall posters and fresh flowers, is small and very popular. There could be a queue so bring some patience.

Charming Isshoku Onigiri shop is busy with customers getting savory rice balls to go. Tempting fillings like katsuobushi with cheese or canned tuna with mayonnaise. I enjoyed a seasonal ginnan ginkgo nut onigiri on the small bench in front of the shop.

The chopped cheese Reuben pastrami sandwich with fries at Freeman Shokudo was a flavor I haven’t had in years. There’s also New York-style Pastrami, pulled pork and a smoked mackerel sandwiches. In the evenings ribs are on the menu. Already looking forward to going back.

Sadly Paddlers Coffee was closed, as it was a Wednesday. Cool outdoor seating space and Paddlers is famous for its coffee. Also passed an interesting shop with Coffee and Gyoza spelled out on its window. There is also a public bath in the neighborhood.

Hatagaya Station is only two stops the Keiō New Line from Shinjuku Station. A friend who lives in the neighborhood calls it Nishihara High Street. I love it. Hope the name catches on!
