Kakigōri shaved ice at Matakichi in the charming #Gion district of #Kyoto. Strawberry with sweetened condensed milk and the intriguing fig with kinomé. Kinomé is the leaf from the sanshō Japanese peppercorn bush. Kinomé has a citrusy and peppery aromas. It was a unique topping to shaved ice and was a nice pairing with figs which are also in season at the moment. The ice is made from spring water from Nikkō.

Matakichi is a café with Japanese sweets and tea. It was just off the main street so was quiet and without the long queues at similar shops. Matakichi is run by Michelin-starred restaurant Gion Matayoshi. The staff said that the idea for the kinomé syrup came from the master, I guess it came from the master at Matayoshi? I could be wrong, but it is an herb that is used at traditional Japanese restaurants.
