Kurobe Unazaki Onsen on the Kurobe River in Toyama is a hot springs resort area that is celebrating 100 years this year. Enraku is a lovely ryokan inn with onsen hot spring baths.

A stay at Enraku includes a multi-course dinner of seasonal dishes and a traditional and luxurious Japanese breakfast. Highlights of the meal include locally sourced seafood from the Sea of Japan and Himi wagyū marbled beef that is grilled at the table. Buri yellowtail is quickly blanched in a hot pot, a dish called shabu shabu. Often made with wagyū beef but here made with a fatty yellowtail. The tableware was also lovely and adding to the meals.

Breakfast includes many small dishes and mirin cured sardines with sesame seeds are grilled at the table.

Some of the rooms have a private outdoor bath which is a very special treat. The room with traditional tatami mats has a seating room overlooking the river. While diners are at dinner a futon is laid out on the tatami. 

The Kurobe River flows next to the ryokan and the sound of the rushing water is a peaceful background. Very early in the morning it was fun to watch a fisherman wade through the water and catch fish.

Enraku also has a selection of traditional crafts including @daigo_glass glassware and @nousaku_official tin for saké vessels guinomi cups and katakuchi pourers in the gift shop.

Guests staying at Enraku are picked up from the Kurobe Unazaki Onsen #shinkansen station. It’s about a 20-minute ride to the inn. It’s a lovely stay on your way to or from #Kanazawa.

There is also a special train that goes deep into the mountains from Kurobe Unazaki Station. I hope to try it next time. It’s magnificent in the autumn.
