Nijiyura is a delightful tenugui shop in Kyoto near the cool @bentoandco shop and Nishiki Market. Tenugui are colorful cotton cloths that have many purposes. Hang a tenugui on the wall for art, a scarf, hand towel, luncheon mat, napkin, for wrapping gifts, and so much more.

I love wearing them as a scarf. In the summer time a damp tenugui works to keep the body cool.

It’s great fun to collect tenugui while traveling in Japan as many shops will make a special design for each city. The Kyoto shop had a few local designs, including a fun wagashi traditional Japanese confectionary design. I went with the Kyoto yasai, local vegetables including bamboo shoots, eggplant, carrots, turnips, and mizuna greens, and taro root.

Check before going. I believe the shop is closed on Mondays. Nijiyura also has a lovely shop in Tokyo at Nihonbashi Coredo Terrace.
